Why should we have analogue photography for our wedding?

In an era where digital photography is the prime focus, the resurgence of analogue photography in weddings and events is a real breath of fresh air. Film photography captures moments in a way that is timeless, artistic, and deeply nostalgic. It’s no wonder that more people are seeking out photographers who offer film. But I wanted to sit down and explain just a little about what makes film so special, and why it’s worth considering for your special day.

I’m Camilla, the name behind Camilla Joy Photography. As a luxury wedding and events photographer, I specialise in capturing moments with a romantic, ethereal touch, creating imagery that is both timeless and classic.

I won’t be be afraid to admit that whilst I didn’t learn photography by shooting film, my adoration for it as been there for as long as I can remember. Albeit maybe not the manual kind (a technical term there) and more the disposable sort. I spent many years as a child wasting rolls of film on instant cameras and then eagerly waiting for them to be developed only to admire the colours, tones and unique qualities those photographs brought (much to my Dad’s disgust of the expense that was spared on said film).

Film photography has a depth and character that digital simply can’t replicate. The soft grain, the subtle colour shifts, and the dreamy tones create an aesthetic that feels both romantic and elegant (something I feel pairs beautifully with the art I produce for weddings and events). Each frame is like a fine-art painting, capturing emotions in a way that feels intimate and authentic. Unlike digital images that can sometimes feel too sharp or overly processed (the clarity setting during the editing stages is a firm favourite of mine), film has a natural beauty that enhances the moment, brings out the rawness and feeling, rather than altering it.

One of the most beautiful aspects of film is its imperfections—subtle light leaks, organic grain, and unexpected blur. These unique characteristics make each image feel one-of-a-kind. Unlike digital photography, where endless retakes are possible, film forces both the photographer and the couple to be fully present in the moment. Each click of the shutter is intentional, adding a raw and genuine quality to the images.

Film photography demands patience and precision. With a limited number of exposures per roll, every frame is carefully composed. This slower pace encourages a more intentional approach to capturing moments, resulting in images that are truly meaningful. Rather than snapping hundreds of images in rapid succession, the photographer takes their time, ensuring that each shot tells a story.

Film has a way of rendering colors with incredible richness and depth. Skin tones appear warm and natural, greens are vibrant yet soft, and highlights have a luminous quality that digital often struggles to replicate. The way film reacts to light brings out an organic, almost ethereal glow that enhances the beauty of wedding photography.

Many photographers, including myself, offer a combination of both film and digital photography to provide the best of both worlds. Digital ensures that no moment is missed, while film adds that extra layer of artistry and emotion. Together, they create a wedding gallery that is both modern and timeless.

Choosing analogue photography for your wedding is about more than just the images—it’s about the experience, the nostalgia, and the artistry. It’s for couples who appreciate the beauty of the past and want their wedding memories to feel like works of art. If you’re looking for wedding photography that is unique, romantic, and timeless, film might just be the perfect choice for you.
